County Dental Hygienists' Association |
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Can you believe the summer is over and Autumn is upon us? I hope all the recent graduates have found employment
and are enjoying their careers. I hope all the student members will remember to convert to being members. I can't
emphasize how important membership is. I also want to remind new graduates that you have two years free of continuing
education classes, but that does not mean you should stop learning. So take heed of the classes we will be having and continue
to be informed. Just a reminder, your license cycle is every 2 years and ending on your birthday month, so don't wait
to get your units at the last minute. (Stress you know). I also want to mention
a trend I see happening that is very disturbing to me. I see ineffective and incomplete scaling. Basically the
calculus isn't being removed. If this trend continues there will be a lot more unneeded perio out there. Check
your instruments for sharpness and use your explorer the way you were taught. There's no one to check your work anymore,
so it's up to you to do the best you can! Kim Stanulis

Elaine Siebers Receives Sunstar/RDH
Award of Distinction Read all about her in the
nomination by Noel Kelsch... I nominate Elaine Siebers for the Sunstar Award
of Distinction 2009. This is a woman that has changed the future of dental hygiene and the lives of her patients, students
and the public alike in a manner that can only be described as unimaginable. Elaine is the perfect example
of a hygienist helping other to live a healthier life. In attending one of Elaine's classroom discussions she shared during
her lecture the vital role that a dental hygienist plays in helping patients live a healthier life. She said "Education
is the most important tool/instrument a dental hygienist can use. The knowledge you present to the patients and the public
will be passed on to future generations." I get to see Elaine's work everyday. She has incorporated these words
into her life and into her students thinking. Each of her students is required to give time in the community and at the Free
Clinic I am involved in. Elaine built this into the program curriculum. Each of those students shares the knowledge Elaine
has given them and many of them return after graduation to volunteer again. Patients who sit in her chair are enlightened
daily as Elaine is insistent on staying up to date on the latest information on disease prevention and identification. She
uses chair time to be in relationship with the patient and to enlighten patients about their oral and full body health. She
has identified diseases and more over given patients information for disease prevention on a daily basis. Elaine shared with
me that her patients are like a puzzle, she loves working with them so that she can find that one missing piece, that one
thing that explains what is happening in their life that created what she sees in their mouth. She said "When I put myself
in relationship with the patient I often find that one piece that is missing, they share with me their life, their habits
and their dreams. I love being able to help them bring health to themselves. I was once confused about a patients oral health
after root planning. He just was not healing right. I had reviewed his health history each visit and finally asked him again
about his diet. He shared with me that he had not been eating much as his wife was ill. The missing piece was right there.
When I told him that if he wanted to take care of his wife he had to take care of himself. Things changed. I was able
to refer him to meals on wheels and in a small way help solve his problem. " If that was not enough, when it comes
to public education then Elaine's presence in the community and nation is. Elaine lost her beloved brother in a tragic
train "accident" that was unnecessary and truly preventable. Some would retreat and be a victim. Elaine refused
to do that, she used the media coverage and public exposure as a means to educate others on the problem with the trains so
that the situation could be changed. Elaine was part of the solution making sure that no else had to experience the pain she
had endured. Elaine has done more for the community than any hygienist that I know. It all started in dental hygiene
school when Elaine took her community dental hygiene class. Elaine was hooked. She has been involved in many community activities
ever since, working with our local dental hygiene component, dental society, Free Dental Clinic and local dental hygiene program
at Oxnard College. Her goal is to improve dental care and knowledge to thousands of adults and children. Elaine wanted
all the students involved in the local dental hygiene component so she developed a program. Her program gets them involved
while in school and then mentors and matches students after graduation to a job in the component. This program has grown our
component and help student's transition into being a member smoothly. Elaine is truly the favorite teacher of thousands
of students and they depend on her not only because of the education she provides but the support and encouragement. I cannot
help but think of the thousands of patients that are receiving superior care because Elaine insists that the students develop
superior clinical skills and patient education skills. I think the accomplishment Elaine is most proud of is when she
helped implement a grant for brushing, flossing and a weekly fluoride rinse program for school age children. Ten years later
she began to teach community dental health at Oxnard College Dental Hygiene program. She had come full circle. Now her dental
hygiene students provide the education and fluoride varnish treatments to thousands of children each year. Her current project
involves implementing a xylitol program in school districts where the children will be given xylitol mints after eating their
breakfast and lunches. This will help prevent and reduce tooth decay from lack of brushing after meals. This will be a habit
they will continue through education and example for life. Elaine is never satisfied. She is never content with the
minimum. She is always looking for another way to change the lives of her students, her patients and the community. Her visions
and work will be seen for generations to come. Her unimaginable dreams are now a part of the community and make a difference
in the lives of thousands. It is a pleasure to nominate this highly deserving dedicated hygienist for this award. Sincerely, Noel Kelsch RDHAP |

| Noel Kelsch Recieves Master Clinician Award The Master Clinicians Award is a prestigious award given by the ADHA and Hu-Friedy to one hygienist in the nation
that has made the biggest impact on the practice of dental hygiene. The award is presented to the dental hygienist who
demonstrates outstanding clinical expertise in relating the interdependence of clinical practice and patient education for
the improvement of patient compliance. There are several criteria a candidate must meet, including 10 years in clinical practice,
out reach into the community, dedication to the profession, innovation in the practice of dental hygiene and current
member of the ADHA. Noel Kelsch RDHAP of Moorpark California was been selected as the award winner for 2009. Noel has
devoted her practice of dental hygiene to not only serve those who can come to her but to reach out to those who have no access
to care. Noel developed a program and protocol that brings comfort care to end of life patients in hospice care. Her
devotion to educating, nurses, doctors, health care professionals, families, patients and the public on this issues
is remarkable. There are so many venues that Noel has broken the barrier to. She has seen beyond the four walls
of a dental clinic and dons a backpack to reach out to the homeless with preventive measures and intervention. Noel stated "having access
to care should not be a privilege, it should be a right for all Americans, I am hoping that this is just the first step.
As a registered dental hygienist in alternative practice I can take my skills to those who cannot come to me. I have gotten
the privilege of seeing patients in their homes, adult day cares, hospice settings and on the street. As people
realize the possibilities for dental hygiene doors are opening and this debilitating contagious disease that
is in epidemic proportion can be a thing of the past! We are the tools to reach that goal. No child should have to live
in pain because there was no access to care, no adult should have to go without a job because they have no smile, we are a
part of that solution." Noel spends her spare time helping the Free Clinic of Simi Valley Dental Clinic end
the disparity in access to care, writing for RDH magazine and speaking across the world on Methamphetamine abuse, Infection
Control and many other subjects. She is the immediate past President of the California Dental Hygienists Association,
has four children and is married to "the man of my dreams" Dave for 30 years.

TRUSTEE REPORT Elvira Cabelli, RDH I hope everyone had a great
and relaxing summer. Our first Board of Trustees meeting was in August and was a "virtual" meeting (via conference
call). One of the issues reviewed is the ADHA By-Laws revision as of June 2009; we will review the draft from
ADHA at our November 2009 Board of Trustees meeting. Also, we have our ongoing concern of increasing our membership
and making sure that dental hygiene program graduates convert their membership. Great news...the
budget for CDHA for 2008-09 is "in the black". Also, congratulations to Rebecca Anderson, RDHAP (our component's
Continuing Education chair) on receiving the Biotene Scholarship. Great job, Becky! Next year's
House of Delegates will be in San Francisco from June 11-13, 2010. In addition, this will be my last year as Trustee
as my term will expire in June 2010; anyone interested in becoming a Trustee effective June 2010 (post-House of Delegates),
please contact me. Thank you, Elvira Cabelli, RDH
