Continuing Education for 2010

Course: Implant Care and the Role of the Hygienist

Attendees will obtain background knowledge and clinical examples of implant care and maintenance as well as hygiene instruction for patients with implants. Compared to individuals with natural teeth, a varied approach must be taken because of the difference in soft tissue attachment, the biophysical nature of the titanium implants and the psychology of the patient population needing implant therapy. Both clinical and home care oral hygiene products will be discussed and evaluated as well as techniques to accomplish these tasks. With an aging population and implant treatment becoming more routine, long-term success can be achieved with appropriate understanding, motivation, teaching and compliance for both dental practitioners and patients.

Course: Products and Technology: Old, New, Tried and True

Stagnant is not a term used to describe quality health care delivery. New products, techniques and research appear almost daily. This course focuses on new products and their value to your dental hygiene practice. No two health care providers and exactly the same, and the products you choose are unique. This course will enable you to choose wisely. This course will give the attendee information on the levels of research and how to extract pertinent information from studies, where to find unbiased research on products, ingredients and technologies, which new products and technologies fit best with their practice philosophy and style. The hands on section of this course will allow you to experience several new screening tools and develop list of contacts for further information or demonstrations of products and/or technologies of interest

Course: Medical Histories and Medical Emergencies:

The Role of Dental Team Members Hands-on Course for the Entire Dental Team

The entire dental team can be a vital asset in confronting a medical crisis. Knowledge is essential when the unexpected occurs.  The dental team will always benefit from calm, informed reactions when facing an emergency. The population is aging in America and with this comes a more medically compromised patient into the dental office. This course provides an overview of how these patients need to be evaluated prior to clinical care.  Prevention and the treatment of emergencies will be covered thoroughly.  Both dentist and staff will benefit from this knowledge. This program will be interactive and include active participation.  Attendees are encouraged to bring their own emergency kits.

Speaker: Cindy Kleiman RDH, BS has spent her entire career working with the medically complex patient.  She began her career at a rehabilitation hospital in Philadelphia, instilling in her a lifetime commitment to the special needs patient.  When she moved to Phoenix, she founded the dental department at a local rehabilitation institute.  Cindy became faculty at Phoenix College in 1987, teaching the treatment of medically complex patients.  Cindy taught “Medical Histories and Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office” at the college for ten years and is a certified CPR instructor.  Currently she provides clinical care at a Phoenix nursing facility and also consults with hospital ICU nurses throughout the country on control of oral infection, which may lead to a deadly condition called ventilator associated pneumonia.  Cindy has published numerous articles in both dental and nursing journals.  She has been profiled in six national journals, including the January 2010 issue of RDH, the April 2009 issue of Access and the June 2007 issue of Hygienetown, and has received four awards for providing unique care. Cindy lectures internationally, including the International Federation of Dental Hygienists’ meeting, Yankee Dental, RDH Under One Roof, and multiple lectures throughout Japan.  She will be presenting this July in London.
